Refactor HTTP endpoint into a proper flow

The use of an async function that returns a future is causing code to be more complex than necessary. For example, instead of returning values, we must return the future and then be sure to complete the future. Refactor the HTTP server into a proper flow so that the functions can be simplified to return non-future values.
