At this time of the month, it's highly likely that your device has rebooted automatically in the last couple of days (Windows updates are released by Microsoft on the second Tuesday of each month, US Pacific time, and applied by Windows 11).

We're discussing this at CPDN at the moment, in the context of science applications failing with unexpected errors like "The storage control block address is invalid." Quoting one of the science programmers,

We also see a high number of disk (or storage) related errors such as : 'system cannot find drive specified', 'drive cannot find specific area or track', 'code 193 error, e.g. boinc_finish(193)', and 'extended attributes are inconsistent'.

There's been no specific mention of the BOINC client itself failing under these circumstances, but further examination of the logs might be fruitful.

@shermie8888, please go to the BOINC Data directory (by default it's 'C:\ProgramData\BOINC') and send us the next files:

  • stderrdae.txt
  • stdoutdae.txt

Thank you in advance

Did you receive the screenshots

@shermie8888, yes, this is why I'm asking for additional information that could be present in the log files.

@shermie8888, thank you for the information provided. Unfortunately, to proceed, I have to ask you to install post-mortem debugger (as described here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/drivers/debugger/enabling-postmortem-debugging#window-sysinternals-procdump), then run BOINC Manager again, wait for the BOINC client to crash, then search for *.dmp files in the specified folder and send them to me for analysis.
Thank you in advance.

@shermie8888, that information is not enough.
Ok, let's try to do it the other way.
Please download this file: https://github.com/BOINC/boinc/releases/download/client_release%2F8.0%2F8.0.2/win_pdb.zip
Unzip everything to the C:\Program Files\BOINC\ folder.
Then run BOINC Manager again, wait for the crash and then report these two files again:

  • stderrdae.txt
  • stdoutdae.txt

@shermie8888, are you sure you have put the files into the installation directory as I asked you to do?
Could you please end me the screenshot with the content of the C:\Program Files\BOINC\ folder?

@shermie8888, ok, that didn't help.
Is it possible to have a remote session with you?
I'd like to check some stuff and get more information quicker.
When you have time for a video call?

Been having this same issue, ended up reinstalling 7.24.1 because at least that version doesn't keep breaking its connection and then complaining to me. Also I highly recommend using something like https://gist.github.com/ for those long walls of text instead of dropping it all here. Even uploading it as a text file probably would have been better at least for viewablility of the comments between the slabs of text on this issue.
