checkpoint enhancement

I thought it might be nice to have a counter next to or after the checkpoints in the log files. I think this might interesting for anxious people like me who would like to see where the process execution is up to. For example:
...
********* prepare data [step 1/10]
...
********* generate manuscript [step 10/10]
