Oh, and always make sure you’re logged in to Google when using the tracker!</p><h2 id="tracker-features">Tracker features</h2><p>Most tracker features are accessed from the Tracker menu option, located at the end of the Google Sheets toolbar. Here’s a brief explanation of what each button does:</p><ul><li>Add checkbox: Insert a missing checkbox into a cell in the started<!-- -->/finished<!-- -->/submitted column.</li><li>Add name dropdown: Insert a missing name dropdown into a cell in the writer name column. These will always have the most up-to-date listing of names<!-- -->!</li><li>Add contributor: Use this option to share credit for a file between multiple (up to four) writers. Just select a cell in the row of the file you want to share, hit the button, then enter each contributor’s name in the pop-up and note down what percentage (<!-- -->1<!-- -->-<!-- -->9<!-- -->9<!-- -->) of the file each writer completed.</li><li>Create submission email: Automatically open an email that’s ready to send (complete with auto-filled address, subject line and contents) to confirm your completion of a file. As with the contributor option, make sure to select a cell from the file’s row so the program knows what info to use.</li></ul><h2 id="using-the-converters">Using the converters</h2><p>The converter tabs are how we move content from Bell’s SmartSheets to the tracker. All you need is the exported Excel file from the SmartSheet! Open the Excel file, then copy and paste the content into your language’s converter, making sure to insert only the file information (no headers!) starting at A2. Double-check that you lined up the new data with the converter’s headers, then use the Tracker <span style="display:inline-block"><span> <span class="katex"><span class="katex-mathml"><math><semantics><mrow><mo>→</mo></mrow><annotation encoding="application/x-tex">\to</annotation></semantics></math></span><span class="katex-html" aria-hidden="true"><span class="strut" style="height:0.36687em;"></span><span class="strut bottom" style="height:0.36687em;vertical-align:0em;"></span><span class="base"><span class="mrel">→</span></span></span></span> </span></span> Converter <span style="display:inline-block"><span> <span class="katex"><span class="katex-mathml"><math><semantics><mrow><mo>→</mo></mrow><annotation encoding="application/x-tex">\to</annotation></semantics></math></span><span class="katex-html" aria-hidden="true"><span class="strut" style="height:0.36687em;"></span><span class="strut bottom" style="height:0.36687em;vertical-align:0em;"></span><span class="base"><span class="mrel">→</span></span></span></span> </span></span> Send to Sheet option from the toolbar.</p><p>From there, you can review how the information will look once it’s sent to the sheet. The converter will automatically clear out your sent files and update the priority tab.</p><h2 id="what’s-the-deal-with-runtimes?">What’s the deal with runtimes?</h2><p>The work we do for Bell is billed on the basis of <em>production hours</em>. One production hour isn’t 60 minutes - it’s 48, presumably because that’s about how long most hour-long shows run without ad breaks. This is why the runtime listed on the tracker is almost always <em>less</em> than what you get credited with on the biweekly reports. </p><p>In the most common case, your 40-ish minute TV show is going to be rounded up to a full hour of productivity. As well, some content types are “worth” more (since they’re more time-consuming, and are thus billed accordingly to Bell).</p><p><strong>Multiplier values and notes</strong>

The short version of why we can’t copy+paste or move stuff around easily is that there’s a bunch of hidden data in the N-Z columns. All the data from the visible cells is parsed and turned into more easily-computable info via a set of array formulas. These array formulas are only editable on the first row - every row below them is automatically filled in with the correct info, based on the formula at the top. </p><p>Because of how Google Sheets works, as soon as you move around a cell that was filled in by an array formula, it goes “inert” and loses its connection to the top-level formula. And once it’s “inert”, the array formulas stop being able to update and overwrite that cell. For reasons known only to Google, rather than just filling all the cells that the formula can, it instead just stops working entirely. And since the priority sheet relies on these hidden cells, that goes haywire too. </p><p>Long story short, it’s annoying, and my next project will be to offload the hidden cells somewhere less prone to editing, hopefully allowing for everyone to have an easier time working with the tracker!</p></div></div></div></div>
