Data archive setup

Here's a brief overview of how to upload your data to the NIRD archive.

We want to use NIRD for 4 reasons: consistency within the Cascella group, accessibility through UiO, unlimited storage, and most importantly, your data gets you a license and doi.
This is not a step-by-step guide, so please read through it before you start the process.

  1. The archive where you should put your data is 🔗.
  2. You should be able to log in via Feide to access the NIRD Archive.
    You may want to use an alternative email account that you know you will have if and after you leave UiO/Norway, but this "can" cause technical problems and confusion.
  3. You have to be approved before you can deposit the data. You will see the instructions on the page after you log in.
    This is manually approved by an administrator. If you don't get a response in 2 business days, please do not wait longer. Send an email to the manager at [email protected]
  4. After approval, it's quite straightforward and explanatory, but there is a step-by-step guide here: 🔗
  5. At one point, you need to choose a license for your data. The very page gives a brief description of each license available, but if you are not sure which one to choose, consult your supervisor.
    It is important to be correct here. For example, Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International license means anyone can copy, redistribute and transform your data + must give credit + provide link to license + indicate changes + cannot use for commercial purposes.
  6. Please upload your dataset as one single zip file and give it a name with the pattern: <journal>-<year of publication>-<brief name>.
    For example, the data corresponding to one of the Cascella group's publications (🔗) is called JCIM-2023-Pressure-MD-data.
    Note that zip is preferred to tar probably due to technical issues with unwrapping the file.
  7. You cannot change your data after you click Submit Dataset.
    It's just like submitting a manuscript for publication. But you can also upload a new dataset if you have messed up something and delete the incorrect one, so it is not as worrying. However, since datasets are large, try to get it right on the first go. Just data storage is responsible for a whopping 2% of global carbon emissions.
  8. After submission, once again, it has to be manually approved to obtain a doi.

  9. List your publication and data archive link in the README.md of this repository. If you do not have access, please send an email to [email protected] with the relevant details as in a publication item in README.md
