Problem

When layers are positioned in context, the current display may inherit modes from parents. However, when taken out of context, those inherited modes are lost. Thus, there's a discrepancy between what a user initially sees and what specs they get.

Solution

Enable the user to set the inherited modes explicitly on the selected layer.
