The thing is, if you disappear the tool bar to have more pane space for files, you have to switch to the keyboard (Alt+Arrow up) and that switching is very inconvenient to mouse users.
An alternate way could be middle mouse click (= click down the wheel for wheel mouses) in any area of the pane. Middleclick on pane area or files does not seem to be in use right now (meaning, it does the same as left click) so it should be available.
It's like that in gnome-commander and is really convenient.
Really nice feature once you get used to it imo. E.g. explorer++ has this feature.
