When typing ] (enter) it tries to complete the macro. Since the first completion is \item[...] this gets inserted. But shouldn't it know that ] is actually a macro? The command to end displayed equation. In this case I just want to write what I actually wrote without worrying about the completion. Can ] be exempted from completing, or be added to the list of completions?
