Some ideas:

If Research: Transparency & hatch form in arc ring #16 (translucency) succeeds, we could use transparent items for signalizing the interaction state.

We then could also use animations to show/hide the menu analogously to this one:

Borders are too wide/too small? (Set semantic background color for submenu items #15 (comment))
Add a small gap between every menu item, or at least set the borderWidth to something greater than 0?
For hue/saturation/lightness, use a rainbow/gradient background? (hard)
For alpha, use a hatch background
