Hello,
I am currently conducting research on VAEP and ATOMIC-VAEP, focusing on using the expected values from ATOMIC-VAEP to evaluate player performance. As ATOMIC-VAEP evaluates based on expected values, the credit or penalty is assigned depending on the outcome of a shot—either 'goal' or 'out'.
However, I have a question regarding certain shot outcomes. Specifically, I noticed that events like hitting the post, being blocked, or saved by the goalkeeper do not result in an explicit event being inserted, unlike shots that result in a goal or go out of play. Is there a particular reason why these outcomes are not accounted for?
In such cases, the shot may receive a disproportionately high value. For example, in penalty kicks, an 'out' result is inserted when the ball goes off the field. However, in other cases, no result value is inserted, leading to a potential issue where penalty kicks that miss the target do not receive a high enough penalty. This could result in an excessively high value being assigned to shots that fail to result in a goal, particularly when no 'out' is recorded.
Thank you for your time, and I look forward to your response.
