How to change the main menu with?

I would like to make the main menu narrower. I know there's a setting called main menu width, but it does not seem to have any effect. No matter what I set it to, the width of the main menu stays the same. Am I missing something? The sub-menu width setting works fine, and successfully changes the width of the sub menus.
