Is multi-currency payments to order supported?

I am not really sure if I process payments correctly. Currently I have something like this which works fine for orders in EUR and payments in EUR. But this does not work if the order is in EUR and the payment is received in a different currency. I thought maybe this could be an issue, as something similar seems to be mentioned at mangento2[1]

$payment = $orderpay->getPayment();

How should I change registerCaptureNotification($payTotal?
