You have to be able to specify an http: URL, for local testing or for other
deployments that aren't using TLS.
Maybe the right thing is a warning if things don't look the way they
usually do. E.g. if the prefix is of the form http://*.opentreeoflife.org,
it could generate a warning and continue. Would that do the trick?
