Migrate timeline essay

When I attempt to use migration_lookup plugin to migrate eck entity references to paragraph entity references, I get the following error for each timeline essay node being migrated:

v1_timeline_essay:field_timeline_essay_items:migration_lookup: Extra unknown items for map migrate_map_v1_timeline_item in source IDs: array ( 'target_id' => '1', )

I have tried introducing a sub_process, which does get rid of the error, but does not result in entity references being migrated.

I will also note that the entities themselves are migrating just fine. The difficulty is with the references to them.
