I suspect everyone has a different affinity for each of these comments. However, in whole, this is a pretty valuable picture. I think our target audiences are somewhat different in that each code writer has a stake in the improvement of their code so as to avoid errors that reflect on their research and themselves. Understanding this is crucial. Establishing this motivation is very important to the context and what flows after. And if code writers really doesn’t want to expose themselves to improvement, it’s really OK to let them sink on their own. Learning takes some perverse paths sometimes, and those coders will come back more eager next time. Just as important, good to train reviewers to project optimism and good teaching principles. Otherwise, the heartiest of code writers will turn away. So: 1. Affirm the motivation towards critique/improvement in the code writer 2. Establish good teaching principles in the reviewer This is an exercise in human nature.
