I don't know if this can be solved. I am using Schildichat for a "private" Matrix network that does not federate with matrix.org.
At the first start, I get the dialog popup with the question if I want to enter the room with update announcements. If I click on yes, I get an error message with M_UNKNOWN.

This is clear, as this room can't be reached from my matrix net (of potential many federated) servers.

I think, Schildichat should test if the room is reachable before asking for that - because it might astonish users if they click on a "yes, I want to be up to date" button, and the "thing doesn't" work. The average user does not understand that.

This dialog hasn't been added back to the ongoing rewrite yet and I wasn't a huge fan of it to begin with, maybe best to just not add it back
