Server owner messages break everything

What it says on the tin. This issue is still confusing and weird. If the server owner sends messages while the bot is listening, varied and inconsistent errors appear in the bot's ability to manage user state. The server owner does not need to interact directly with the bot via commands for this to happen. Requires investigation.
