The default permission defined in Makefile is 4750 => -rwSr-x---, means only users in the adm group can execute the program. You should do so by logging into desktop as an administrator (of "adm" group) and then launch the program under that user - note that non-login users cannot display system indicator in Ubuntu, so you cannot switch to other users by command or even by su/sudo.

Ordinary users should not be able to execute it as it's dangerous.
