20 Questions Responses

What is the best way to ask a question?
Ask questions to instructors that you absolutely cannot solve on your own. First try answering your own questions , then try again and if you come across a blocker consult with peers first.

How can you explicitly schedule time with your instructor to review a problem?
You can schedule 1 on 1 time through the Calendly link within the syllabus wiki or schedule time to meet during lab hours after 1 p.m.

Are there any other times that we're available?
Instructors can be contacted via email or as available for 15 minute check in meetings

What are the three possible grades applied to every assignment? What do they mean?
Green- Satisfactory - submitted work correctly and demonstrates understanding of key concepts and learning objectives.
Orange- Not Yet - submitted the work correctly but may not have met all learning objectives
Red - Incomplete - not submitted correctly or does not contain all deliverables
What is the link to your GitHub profile? Your profile image?

In what week do we plan to review material?
Week 6 will be Halftime and allow for review of materials from previous weeks.

At what time does class begin? Is attendance mandatory?
Lectures begins at 9 a.m. and lab begins at 1:30 p.m.
Yes you must attend each lecture daily.

After what amount of time are you counted late?
15 minutes early is on time. I will consider myself late if I am not ready to learn by 8:45

When are you counted absent? Does that matter?
4 absences will make it difficult for job recommendation and cause a student to fall behind in learning objectives

What is the most common kind of mistake in programming?
Not saving your work and progress regularly

What are some strategies you can use to work through a difficult problem?
Break the problem down into smaller parts. Work through each part to best of your abilities. There is also progress to be made milestones you can reach.

What exactly is the ⌥ key, anyway?
The Option is used as a modifier for other command codes. It also allows easier access to accents and symbols.

What do you think will be the biggest barrier to your success in this class?
I believe my biggest challenge will be learning to move on to new subjects and assignments even if previous assignments are not fully completed. You can always go back. Everything does not need to be perfect or fully understood the first time you learn and there will be opportunities to review.

How can you identify with the Growth and Fixed Mindsets? In what areas do you feel fixed? Where do you see the most potential for growth?
I feel fixed in very few areas of my learning process. I don't feel the need to validate my intelligence or succeed every time. I will apply a Growth Mindset to as many learning experiences as possible because I believe my skills can use assessment and constant improvement. This includes my approach to development skills, professional skills and organizational skills.

Do you consider yourself a top-down or bottom-up thinker and why?
I consider myself more of a bottom-up thinker because I look to know the root and meaning, or foundation of concept and then ad more concepts gradually. I fined it's best to plant a seed early and then let the plant grow and evolve.

What do you think about your "learning style" and the debate about their validity? Which would you categorize yourself as and why?
Each student will have their own unique balance or learning styles. Personally, I feel I learn best aurally or logically. I like to hear a clear explanation of a concept and then write out or test the concept by building logic around it.

Today I updated my Github profile picture and account details. I reviewed learning style and the NPR bit about "why that is all bunk"
I don't know if I have a particular learning style so I am interested to learn more about which learning styles are most effective when studying JS, and JQuery

I also reviewed conditionals (if, else if, else) in JS and started a new lesson about Loops and Arrays.

Hi Evan,

Thanks for the feedback! It sounds like you have some experience with the command line and terminal in general. I look forward to working with you and picking you brain.
Are you going to be heading to the mixer on the 31st? If so, I'll meet you then!
Best,
Greg

@gturmel No worries! I will definitely be at Tobacco Road and I look forward to meeting you. Really excited to get started with the course and get a deeper understanding of all the amazing things we can do with programming.
