After reading a suggestion Backups accumulate indefinitely #58 from 2015 I would like to offer a fresh observation.

An option to inhibit back up if the time interval since last back up is say five minutes would dramatically reduce the number of backups in my experience, this was mentioned in the 2015 discussion.

Surely the value of a backup is to avoid the loss of work? A simple measure like inhibit backups until five minutes have passed would in most cases mean that the loss would be reduced to five minutes of work? Of course one can delete a lot of text in five minutes but the assumption is that one does not mind repeating five minutes of deletion activity starting from the last saved point so in terms of work activity (thinking and keystrokes) rather than volume of text actually deleted the argument still seems good to me. Is it sensible then to simply start thinking about loss of work and think only in terms of time elapsed since last backup - just a final conditional in addition to the ones already in place?

On balance it's not a great hassle to periodically visit the backup directory and manually prune, I have a routine these days where each time I manually prune the date ordered files the less recent days get more and more pruned as my confidence grows that I have not cut myself off from an interesting fork in my knowledge base that was subsequently deleted (perhaps later lamented).

Overall TiddlyDesktop has made my TiddlyWiki life easier, more productive and more satisfying, if the requirement for the manual pruning of the backup directory is the only price to pay for this fantastic combo then I have no complaints and can only heap praise on TiddlyWiki and TiddlyDesktop - top marks - probably the two most useful pieces of software that I use ( apart from my operating system !! )
