That would be really cool. And You're right, apart from the terrain wrapping smoothly it wouldn't be hard to implement. Not sure how to smooth the terrain transition just yet though but it might be able to use something similar to what we will need to smoothly switch between biomes.
Like old school 2D RPGs, make it so that you can walk completely around your world, like it's a round planet.
The only difficult part of this would be making the terrain generation look natural at the point where it wraps around.
