Sharing and promoting activist.org

This pinned issue is for discussing where and how best to promote activist. The purpose is to spread the word so that others can find activist as potential users, to provide feedback and to grow the contributors base. The issue text will be edited as the discussion below progresses :)

Everyone is welcome to share their input, and efforts to share activist are much appreciated! Communities revolving around activism, the movements that we work or will work on, open-source, and the technologies that activist uses should all be considered.

I'm sending PRs to add activist to a few places that host open-source projects :)

Hi there!
I was looking for newbie-friendly issues/features and found this project on up-for-grabs. I guess creating slack channel for a project might help communication sharing and promoting.

Hi @dmelnychuk! Thanks for your interest and your suggestion 😊

We're trying to keep to open-source software as much as possible and are thus using Mattermost instead of Slack. The idea of a public chat is one that we've been thinking about for a bit though as it'd likely be good to have something along with the GitHub Discussions. I'd say discussions here are more for projects at a greater scale than activist's current state. I talked with the other main team member and we'll maybe add a public channel :) Would you want to write something up about it in the readme here?

I figure a badge like the one below would help to advertise the public chat for those who know Mattermost (the code that generates it is below):

mattermost

[![mattermost](https://img.shields.io/badge/Mattermost-1D335B.svg?logo=mattermost&logoColor=ffffff)]()

From there we could also talk about it shortly in the contributing section of the readme. What do you think? :)

Hey @dmelnychuk 👋 Just wanted to let you know that I did act on your suggestion 😊 We talked it over in the team and decided that Matrix was the best option rather than Mattermost. We've now created a public Matrix space where people can discuss development, localization and anything else they'd like to :)

Thanks again for your suggestion!

Two more places it would be good to post activist to are:

Edit: PRs found below

An interesting idea would be to add a GitHub action to the Development room of Matrix. This could be achieved via Matrix-Chat-Message or a similar action. Big thing is that we don't want to spam the development community when they can choose to watch the repo, but a basic thing that I think we could do is an action that's triggered when a PR is merged that talks about which issue it was and who committed to it. Thinking on this is to make an automated way to celebrate people's contributions 😊

Looking into Vue newsletters would be a thing to do in the future, with there being a list of a few here.

Thoughts on potentially getting activist on awesome-for-beginners?

I guess I'd prefer to put it in the TypeScript section, but would make sense to try to open a PR :) I'd thought this repo wasn't very active, but the maintainer did work on some stuff recently enough now that I'm looking. Should I open one, or would you like to, @Vince155?

@andrewtavis I can go ahead an PR if that's okay. It does seem like the maintainer isn't too active in the repo but if there's a lot of traffic to awesome-for-beginners then a PR can help them to activist!

@andrewtavis While "Matrix" is good (for messaging), "Jitsi" could be a valuable tool for (video conferencing).

Jitsi is a video conferencing platform that uses WebRTC for real-time communication. This could be valuable for hosting virtual meetings, discussions, or events on activist.org. It's a good fit for scenarios where video communication is needed.

Hey @gitgoap! We definitely will be thinking Jitsi for eventually doing video calls within the platform - if and when it gets there :) Thanks for the suggestion! We Use Element Call for our community calls as of now, so that could be another option if it gets to be a bit more stable.

@andrewtavis I think expanding Activists accessibility by enabling multilanguage which I see the platform already has for Deutch and Fench is a good idea and also allowing local adaptations especially for activists in non-English,French or Deutch regions.

Then for contributors I think adding personalized Activists badge for their contributions can foster community and commitment.

Can you explain a bit more about the badge, @Stegen54? :) Your talking achievements? And we do have interest in other localizations! If you're interested, the link to the Weblate project is here 🌐

For the badge I mean something like giving out badges to contributors, they could add the badges to their Profile readme or somewhere else they want to. I feel it will make more people look forward to contributing. Having different badges also would make sense, I'll list some ideas 💡

  • Code contributor
  • Documentation Contributor
  • Bug Hunter
  • Feature Innovator
  • Issue Resolver
  • Community Mentor
  • First time contributor badge

These are just example of titles for different badges, Issue resolver badge can be given when an issue is resolved, bug fixer for those that identify a bug,fix a bug and the likes.

I feel it'll make more people interested in contributing.

So these would be say SVGs that we host on GitHub and then they can be put into profile readme markdown files?

I'll give it some thought and maybe throw some together in the Figma, @Stegen54 :) Thanks for your suggestions!
