Regarding Ansible Testing For Linux, Mac and Windows

Prerequisites

• This was not already reported in the past (duplicate check)
• It does reproduce it with code from main branch (latest unreleased version)
• I include a minimal example for reproducing the bug
• The bug is not trivial, as for those a direct pull-request is preferred
• Running pip check does not report any conflicts
• I was able to reproduce the issue on a different machine
• The issue is not specific to any driver other than 'default' one

Environment

I am trying to use the molecule on Windows, Linux and MacOS as well

What happened

Description

• I am using ansible automation to install softwares like maven, node ,java, Terraform etc in both Windows and WSL(Linux)
• We are planning some automated testing for Windows, WSL and even for MacOS using Github Actions
• We are providing installation of softwares like node, terraform, java, python etc

Scripting

• Actually i am trying to implement for one of the sample role maven

Requirement

• We are planning to have some testing for role level using molecule for the Windows, WSL, Macos using Github Actions
• Using Molecule how can we have the script at role level. need script for that would be more helpful

Ask / Help

• Does the molecule would be a better choice for doing the functional and integration at role level?
• If that is possible need some script how to do at each role and Need to define Github Actions Workflow to include all the roles for testing the workflow

A couple thoughts here, assuming you have the molecule scenarios setup the way you want:

1. Write a shell script and call that in your CI to run selected molecule scenarios
2. Write the scenarios such they can all be run at once and build there own infrastrucutre needed for the scenario
3. Wrap your molecule scenarios with pytest as an entry point, and then pytest amrkers could be used to selectively run scenarios: https://github.com/ansible/pytest-ansible?tab=readme-ov-file#running-molecule-scenarios-using-pytest
4. Call molecule from tox, and then call tox from your github action (this is how many of our projects are setup)

Related thoughts:

1. Ensure whatever you do in a github action can be easily reproduced and run on a user work station, this will make failure resolution much easier
2. Add test specific logic only to your molecule scenarios and not the actual production roles, this will keep a clean seperation of duties and ensure your production roles container only the production code

Ask / Query

• When i referred the molecule documentation (https://ansible.readthedocs.io/projects/molecule/getting-started/)

• I get to know that there would be a molecule files generated as per below screenshot
  

• I have the below structure with different roles under a single project
  

• I need to test the roles locally using molecule test first to verify how the test scenarios are going on 🙂

• Is there any possibility to use github actions to test the existing roles using different distros for Windows , Linux, Mac ?

Hope this helps and need guidance on the point #4 and point #5 would be more helpful for me
