Starting December 10th, 2024, only the latest stable branch of applications deployed by Bitnami Helm charts will receive updates in the free Bitnami catalog. Previous versions already released will not be deleted. They are still available to pull from DockerHub.
For example, for PostgreSQL, only branch 17 (the latest stable version) will be maintained in the free catalog. Other upstream-supported branches, such as 13, 14, 15, and 16, will be exclusively available through Bitnami Premium.

Beginning on December 16th, 2024, all free Bitnami Helm charts and containers will be subject to standard pull-rate limits and pull caps in Docker Hub.

To continue accessing up-to-date releases of all the upstream-supported branches and to pull without any limitations, you can upgrade to Bitnami Premium. Please check the Bitnami Premium page in our partner Arrow Electronics for more information.

Out of curiosity, Was this something imposed by docker.io agreements, or was it a business decision from VMware/broadcom?

is there anywhere where the rationale behind it is available?

I would like to urgently request Bitnami/VMWare (@Maarc, @ridruejo, @carrodher) work with Docker (@justincormack, @girisreenivas) to keep the no-rate-limits on a few critical images so Kubernetes clusters don't break a few days before Christmas all over the world (and with only 3 days notice).

Specifically, the Bitnami images which contain clients like kubectl, bash, mysql are used by countless open-source project and enterprises because they don't have pull limits. Suddenly introducing limits will break many important things like CronJobs and other scripts, because they are pulled more frequently than other images.

Please reconsider adding the rate-limits on the following critical images, at least till after the holidays:

But if you only do one, please do docker.io/bitnami/kubectl as that one will cause sooo many problems, as it's effectively the standard kubectl image.

I didn't ask for this for Christmas.

while I can understand the decision, doing this with such short notice and right before Christmas is just sad.

The standard image of kubectl is provided by the Kubernetes project and can be found at registry.k8s.io/kubectl:v1.32.0, it goes back to v1.28.0.

Keep in mind that if you are using the legacy Helm index (https://charts.bitnami.com/bitnami/index.yaml), your deployments are still subject to standard Docker Hub rate limits because the index also points to Docker Hub.

Hi, product manager for Bitnami here. We hear you and realize the timing is not ideal. Unfortunately we are obligated to make this change as quickly as possible due to business and partner requirements. However, in an effort to minimize impact on this community we are now implementing a plan to roll out these changes incrementally and not fully implement until you get through the holiday break.

This morning we have introduced the changes temporarily for three hours to measure the effect. We will then implement a second 12-hour temporary change on Thursday December 19th. Finally, the permanent change will take effect on Monday, January 6th 2025.

Thank you for the feedback. For more context about these changes, and our continued commitment to providing the Bitnami catalog for our community, you can read more in our recent blog post.

There, I fixed it for you.

Time to get rid of bitnami images, I guess. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Edit: I definitely wish you good luck with the upcoming licencing issues!

Why would there be any licensing issues?

Why would there be any licensing issues?

I'm sure other companies like mongodb love it when vmware sells their software with a hefty price tag.

Merry christmas everyone!
And a happy on-call duty.

Now seriously, @carrodher can't you delay this decision one month?
Roll it out on the 6th of January or even the 2nd or 3rd (which is a Friday, but still better than this), at least there will be people in the office by then to put out the unexpected fires, it won't have to be the poor people who pulled the short straw and got the christmas/new year's on call duty.

You will save a lot of people a lot of headaches and in return get some kudos for reviewing your decision.

Bitnami moved to Docker Hub [1] which forces us to login to
Docker Hub (the workflow pulls too much Bitnami helm charts
for the anon pull request limit).

Please note the Docker Hub secrets are accessible only via
project branches. So PR from fork would no longer work.

It also updates and simplifies the Docker Hub account logics
as we have a single Docker Hub account now. It also debugs
ratelimit both with registered account and anon to track
incorrect Docker Hub calls by cnf-testsuite.

This release improves `group by` performance of compressing data and filters,
introduces the ability to add secondary indexes, and contains the highly upvoted
community request of transition table support. We recommend that you upgrade at the
next available opportunity.

**Highlighted features in this release**
* TAM
* Significant performance improvements for aggregations using a `group by` with one column
and/or using a filter clause. SIMD
* Transition tables

**Dropping support for Bitnami images**
After the recent change in Bitnami’s [LTS support policy](bitnami/containers#75671),
we are no longer building Bitnami images for TimescaleDB.

**Features**
* #7341: Vectorized aggregation with grouping by one fixed-size by-value compressed column (such as arithmetic types).
* #7104: Hypercore table access method.
* #6901: Add hypertable support for transition tables.
* #7482: Optimize recompression of partially compressed chunks.
* #7458: Support vectorized aggregation with aggregate `filter` clauses that are also vectorizable.
* #7433: Add support for merging chunks.
* #7271: Push down `order by` in real-time continuous aggregate queries.
* #7455: Support `drop not null` on compressed hypertables.
* #7295: Support `alter table set access method` on hypertable.
* #7411: Change parameter name to enable hypercore table access method.
* #7436: Add index creation on `order by` columns.
* #7443: Add hypercore function and view aliases.
* #7521: Add optional `force` argument to `refresh_continuous_aggregate`.
* #7528: Transform sorting on `time_bucket` to sorting on time for compressed chunks in some cases.
* #7565: Add hint when hypertable creation fails.
* #7390: Disable custom `hashagg` planner code.
* #7587: Add `include_tiered_data` parameter to `add_continuous_aggregate_policy` API.
* #7486: Prevent building against PostgreSQL versions with broken ABI.
* #7412: Add [GUC](https://www.postgresql.org/docs/current/acronyms.html#:~:text=GUC) for the `hypercore_use_access_method` default.
* #7413: Add GUC for segmentwise recompression.

**Bugfixes**
* #7378: Remove obsolete job referencing `policy_job_error_retention`.
* #7409: Update `bgw_job` table when altering procedure.
* #7410: Fix the `aggregated compressed column not found` error on aggregation query.
* #7426: Fix `datetime` parsing error in chunk constraint creation.
* #7432: Verify that the heap tuple is valid before using.

**Thanks**
* @bharrisau for reporting the segfault when creating chunks.
* @k-rus for suggesting that we add a hint when hypertable creation fails.
* @pgloader for reporting the issue in an internal background job.
* @staticlibs for sending the pull request that improves the transaction check in CAGG refresh.
* @uasiddiqi for reporting the `aggregated compressed column not found` error.

This release introduces the ability to add secondary indexes to the columnstore, improves group by and filtering performance through columnstore vectorization, and contains the highly upvoted community request of transition table support. We recommend that you upgrade at the next available opportunity.

**Highlighted features in TimescaleDB v2.18.0**

* The ability to add secondary indexes to the columnstore through the new hypercore table access method.
* Significant performance improvements through vectorization (`SIMD`) for aggregations using a group by with one column and/or using a filter clause when querying the columnstore.
* Hypertables support triggers for transition tables, which is one of the most upvoted community feature requests.
* Updated methods to manage Timescale's hybrid row-columnar store (hypercore) that highlight the usage of the columnstore which includes both an optimized columnar format as well as compression.

**Dropping support for Bitnami images**

After the recent change in Bitnami’s [LTS support policy](bitnami/containers#75671), we are no longer building Bitnami images for TimescaleDB. We recommend using the [official TimescaleDB Docker image](https://hub.docker.com/r/timescale/timescaledb-ha)
