Turns out, you need to write a @ at the beginning. But the username, that should be in the field, is slaFFik, not @slaFFik, imo.
This field doesn't support emails or other information, we are always sure that we have username there, so we can trigger the autocomplete.

Yep agree this is odd, thought originally the use of '@' in BP was to ensure user mentioned was notified in updates etc, not something one expects a user to add when typing a user name specifically.
So you need to enter the full username to write a message, you can't use autocomplete to select from when typed several characters.
