The simplest way to use the screen resolution in GNOME in GDM is to run:

sudo ln -s "$HOME/.config/monitors.xml" /var/lib/gdm3/.config/monitors.xml

It would be nice if lightdm also could parse monitors.xml (both version 1, and 2)

It's possible that MATE will use mate-monitors.xml, and GNOMOE gnome-monitors.xml. See
