X11 is getting long in the tooth, feels janky and I would not be surprised if it disappears from MacOS.
Is any consideration being given to an alternative plotting widget? e.g. the qt thing that Matplotlib uses. Ideally it would one up matplotlib and stay around after the plotting program exits. (like good old /XSERVE device from classic PGPLOT)

adding a new interactive device like the quartz window for Mac OS would be possible. The xserve thing would also be possible to implement. Both would require a fair bit of work, the latter less so as some of the interactive functionality is implemented specifically in Xlib (mouse clicks, window interaction etc). This would need to be replicated in a native Mac device but not with an xserve solution
actually yes a Qt driver might be a good cross-platform solution here
