RFC: Performance profiling

Problem

Codegen oft spans into the 10s+ range for our use. I could pop open a node.js profiler... but it would be awesome if there were somtehing like OpenTelemetry spans (or similiar) for tracking/spanning milestones such that I could see what parts of my project are tanking performance.
