Eat Healthy for Less is a meal planning app (coming soon!) that will help you save money on groceries while achieving your nutrition goals.
-
Spending too much money on groceries?
-
Worried about you and your kids eating right?
-
Having trouble following your doctor's diet advice?
Eat Healthy for Less will ask you a few questions about your goals and then zip you straight to a week's worth of dinner recipes and a shopping list with the groceries you need to make them. Ready to shop in 60 seconds!
This video shows the app prototype we demoed at Google Hack for Change just 48 hours after our team got together. The concept of the app shines through, even though it was a rush job and there were some problems with our food price database.
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/8WcR2nYKgfo" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>Here we're looking at EatHealthyForLess, a mobile web application optimized for Chrome for Android and created at Google's Hack for Change Hackathon 2013.
EatHealthyForLess allows people to plan a weekly meal plan that operates under both nutritional and budgetary constraints. We offer options to shop for a single person, or for an entire family. The meal plan can satisfy nutritional goals, allowing people to eat healthier while on a budget. The zip code will be used to adjust the consumer price index to satisfy the budgetary constraint.
Next we can generate this week's menu. As you can see, we now have seven meals planned for us that satisfy our constraints. By clicking on the name of a meal, we can dive into it's recipe and see what it is. Going back, we can also inform the system that we have our own plans on a certain night, or that we would prefer a different dish.
After approving our menu, the eat healthy for less app generates an aggregated shopping list that easily lets us find all the ingredients we need for the entire week. This allows users to avoid over-buying and wasting food and money as well as underbuying and having to return to the store every few days.
We hope this application will help people live and eat healthier while also staying on a reasonable budget.
Here's the presentation that accompanied our demo. We think our app could have a big impact on a lot of people who want to eat healthy but aren't sure where to start. So many times, the reaction when we tell a friend about the app is that they want to use it right away.
The Eat Healthy for Less project was just a crazy idea on the morning of Saturday June 1, but a pickup team of developers at the Google Hack for Change 2013 hackathon turned it into a winning app in just 48 hours!
