ok I know this chip.

  1. It is supposed to have 4Mb flash so you can use:
esp8266:
  board: d1_mini 
  1. This chip is quite finicky. Sometimes it connects to the UART without any issues. However, it often requires stabilizing its power supply. I use an AMS1117 module from AZ-Delivery, and it works much better.
