From what I understood, CTCSS is a tone transmitted with a signal, and a receiver may choose whether to ignore or play back a signal based on this tone.
We currently have the option of a full Frequency Copy (hold FC), where the radio will listen to a strong signal nearby, and copy its frequency and CTCSS, and also for a CTCSS copy (F+* Scan, where it'll stay in the currently set frequency, and only copy the CTCSS tone.
I wanted an always-listening CTCSS tone display, where, regardless of you having a CTCSS set, it'll display the CTCSS of any transmission in the current frequency.
So say you have no CTCSS and someone transmits with CTCSS 1, you'll hear the transmission and see on the display that it's using tone 1. And if you have CTCSS set to 2, and someone transmits with CTCSS 1, you won't hear the transmission, but you'll see on the display that your radio detected a signal with tone 1 on your frequency.
Sometimes when I'm scanning, I start hearing people talking on a frequency, but I'm unsure if they're using CTCSS, so I have to manually enter CTCSS copy mode, and wait for another transmission, to only then be able to copy the tone.
It'd also be useful for the radio to "reply" in the same detected tone, so say you have no tone set, and someone transmits with tone 1, you'll hear the transmission, your radio will show the transmission is using tone 1, and when you press PTT within a short time frame, it'll also transmit with tone 1, as it was the last detected tone, so you can actually reply.
