I don't think it's a feature as it's probably a bug since with bridges, mentions won't work as most apps don't support mentions by usernames without a tag.
Also, only name mentions don't work for me regularly on element, while proper mentions with user pills do.

I just discovered the same issue when chatting with friends. The issue is still present in the current version. What is irritating is that If I mention someone with @ in a reply until I actually send the message the name mentioned is shown as a "pill", but as soon as you send it's sent as normal text. The desktop client is not affected by the same problem. |
