The Mastodon backend pre-defines a limit of 500 characters per post. Some instances offer more, and I don't know if the limit is detectable by API call. But apart from that, there is another thing: Mastodon treats any hyperlink within a post as 23 characters, no matter how many characters the link actually has. In the original Mastodon client, this fact is considered when you submit a post. In Elk, however, you can't send a post with more than 500 characters, even if it includes hyperlinks which (counted as 23 characters) would reduce the sum of characters below 500. I'd love it when this could be considered in Elk as well.
