Currently the ephemera collection is split across 6 big boxes, in no particular order. Visitors don't know what's in it and so can't access it.

we need some simple divisible archive boxes to store the ephemera in a way that is addressable and accessible.

Pip and I are planning a day to start bring some kind of order to the collection on the 27th of September. Today we went through one of the boxes to see what's in it (and what we're getting ourselves in for). It's anthologies, catalogues, exhibition publications, and other bits and bobs of different sizes.

We feel like there's no obvious system that we can organise the collection with without knowing what's in it. So to get visibility of what's in the boxes, we think the first step is to 'catalogue' it in some way.

Currently we're just thinking of creating a spreadsheet with a row for each item with it's:

  • title
  • year of publication
  • author/publisher
  • note on what it is
  • which box it's in (we numbered the boxes 1-6)

We think that is a place to start.

@e-e-e have you got any thoughts on this? Is this a good idea? Is any of this already done?

@e-e-e nice 🌮 any more hints on what kinda size you're thinking? https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/c/office-supplies/archiving/archive-boxes

Pulling out the box today was pretty heavy—I recon smaller boxes would be better, but are they going to fit everything?

@equivalentideas you have access to this - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1NlE9z3IQ1JmZgW3F4jNK_oEojDz80SDwMTBP_jueKRM/edit?usp=sharing

The important thing is finding an trove link for the record. Then we can import the trove data rather than manually logging. Not all stuff has trove links - so perhaps separate them out.

re: boxes - I did the math on some at office works and nothing is quite right. We could - but perhaps too much work. By some card and make simple thin boxes ourself.

I am happy to take a day of work to help with this - we could probably get through it quite quickly too with many hands and computers.

Nice! Do you know which box that's from?

I feel like the first step is to just work out what everything is and then get / make something to suit what we design. Is that too ambitious?

@e-e-e So it the idea that some of what's in the boxes goes onto the shelves?

@equivalentideas no, just was a temporary way of keeping track.
doing the boxes is a nice idea.

@e-e-e cool. So the dream situation is that it's all in the trolly, in labeled boxes, organised somehow to make it accessible to people?

@e-e-e how do you find the record for an item in http://trove.nla.gov.au/?

That is the dream.

As for trove. Just use key indicators like title, author or isbn to search. Sometimes you will find multiple versions - so its good to make sure that the edition information is accurate - selecting the record with the most complete and accurate information.

To do this at an event we need:

  • lots of phone chargers / power boards
  • phones or other devices with web browser and camera
  • overhead projector or digital projector to show everyone what's going in, project the collection into life 🌿
