The registration process could be made simpler by running $ reuse register.
Once all the server-side checks are successful the tool could print out links to the badge in asciidoc, markdown and rest formats.

It's an interesting idea but I'd refrain from adding this into the tool, whose features shall be focussed on helping to make a project REUSE compliant, and checking its status. While the API is great, it's not a mandatory step for REUSE conformance.
To clarify: I did not mean to imply that the use of register has to be mandatory. Users might choose to run register to start the registration process at https://api.reuse.software/register from the command line for their convenience.
