Hey @geopandas/collaborators!

During the last dev call, we agreed that it is time for the next iteration of the user survey. Apart from some of the questions we asked the last time, to see the progress, we wanted to know more about:

  • what is adoption of pyogrio? Are there compatibility issues still in terms of making default instead of Fiona
  • what is adoption of shapely 2.0?
  • is there still demand for native python GIS file I/O?
  • are installation issues better?
  • postgis support: how important? could this be handled in some other adapter package instead of within GeoPandas? (which is buggy) - could we use Ibis? (Integration with PostGIS via ibis geopandas#1164)

Do you have any other ideas? I can then draft the questions, aiming at mid September release.

I will also check with the Scientific Python as there were some discussions on having shared subset of questions across the projects.

For a reference, here is the last one with results -> https://github.com/geopandas/geopandas-user-surveys/blob/main/2020.ipynb

Some thoughts from me:

  • it might be interesting to know how often people directly use pyogrio/ fiona and shapely, as well as adoption as that would give us some indication of how easy or difficult it might be for someone to switch away from fiona / upgrade shapely.
  • It might be interesting to know what gis formats people regularly use (i.e. adoption of geoparquet, how worthwhile having driver specific conveniences is in geopandas)
  • Perhaps not super useful from a library perspective, but from understanding a community I'd be interested to know what industry people are using geopandas in (distinct from the existing occupation question), this might also be useful to identify libraries where geopandas is a key dependency - which might be useful to be aware of ahead of 1.0 and any potential breaking changes.
  • Would it be useful to suggest users to provide benchmark data if they have it? I don't have the context on the creation of https://github.com/geopandas/benchmarks, but there's not exactly a lot list there, this might be good opportunity to get input from a wider slice of people.

I'd still be curious about/interested in users' work across the geospatial stack, including dask, rasterio, xarray, etc. Last time, we asked about libraries, but not about specific workflows like we did in the user priority question. We know users mention rasterio+xarray quite a bit alongside geopandas, but we don't quite know where the rough edges or documentation gaps are in that interface.
