Problem adding Category

Trying to create (add) my first Category, getting the following:

Fatal error: Array and string offset access syntax with curly braces is no longer supported in /var/www/html/joomla/media/k2/assets/vendors/verot/class.upload.php/src/class.upload.php on line 2726

Okay, that fixes that problem but introduces another one, it breaks captcha Bill L
