How to debug or manually enable shell integration if it's not working?

I now realized that shell integration hasn't really been working since I started using Ghostty yesterday.

Symptoms:

• ghostty command not found
• click to move cursor doesn't work
• new tab doesn't open in previous working directory

I'm using fish shell, and I've specified shell-integration = fish in the config, but it's not working.
How can I go about debugging it? Or is the "integration" step sourcing a script? Can I load it manually?

fish is installed by nix-darwin + home-manager by the way, not sure if this makes any difference.

OS: macOS Sonoma 14.6.1 arm64

OK checked how Ghostty does shell integration and it looks like $XDG_DATA_DIRS is not properly set.
