Links not clickable on Linux under tmux

Description

I'm not able to click on links when running tmux on Ghostty in Linux. The link underline temporarily appears but clicking it with Shift+Ctrl does not produce the expected behavior. I do have mouse support enabled, that's why I'm pressing Shift.

What I've tried

I use the same tmux configuration on MacOS and pressing Shift+Cmd when clicking works just fine.

I tried starting tmux without config and it works, but probably because mouse support is turned of by default.

I also tried zero configuration except for enabling the mouse (just to rule out any other configurations that could be causing issues) and it doesn't work either.

I can replicate this issue by just starting a default tmux installation with just the following config line:

set -g mouse on

I can replicate the same behaviour on MacOS+Ghostty. Outside of tmux, when holding Cmd and hovering a link the underline appears and I can click through, but when on a tmux pane, neither holding Cmd or Cmd+shift replicate that behaviour.

I also have mouse mode enabled and can resize panes and select text when holding shift

You're right, Cmd+shift does make it work

It seems mouse-shift-capture = true is the culprit. with this enabled i can cmd click links outside tmux both locally and on cloud hosts, but nothing works inside tmux
if i comment out mouse-shift-capture it works fine, I havent tested with other settings for mouse-shift-capture

• cmd click outside tmux
• shift-cmd click inside tmux

this works both locally and remotely via both ssh & mosh

Clarification: I run MacOS locally and Linux on the remote hosts

mouse-shift-capture is not set in my config and now I tried setting it with all possible values (true, false, always and never) to see if I could spot any variation of the issue, to no effect.

Setting mouse-shift-capture = false made the trick and cmd + shift works now for me.

You should be able to remove that line from the config,false is the default setting.

It also happens with zellij on Linux.
It does not access the URL if you click with CONTROL. The behavior is as follows: if you press CONTROL with the mouse pointer over the URL, the URL is momentarily underlined for about 100-200ms, and then the ability to click on the URL disappears. If you click during that brief moment when the URL is underlined, it opens the browser normally as it should.

i have this exact behavior with linux + tmux

if you use mouse-shift-capture in your settings try commenting it out, that made link clicking inside tmux work for me

Yes, this is the exact behavior. I though the link was not clickable, but after reading your comment, I managed to "race" the behavior and click the link in those 100ms that it underlines and the link opened.

Using command + shift, I can open links in tmux on macOS. However, I miss being able to open links with just shift, as I could in Alacritty. Is there a way to configure this so that shift alone opens links? I often switch back to Alacritty because my muscle memory is so accustomed to using shift, and using ghostty feels cumbersome in comparison.
