my "backspace" key advances the cursor one step to the right

Issue

I'm connected to an ssh server. When i enter a command and make a typo, I try to delete it with the backspace key.
Unfortunately, this does not delete the last character, but it advances the cursor one character to the right.

This behaviour is different from all other terminals I've installed.

What could be the issue here?

I also found this right now, but only due to the error message missing or unsuitable terminal: xterm-ghostty.
