Do you have an alternate GTK theme installed? The bulk of the warning messages seem to indicate a problem with the theme. It might not be a problem, but the Gnome developers strongly recommend against theming GTK apps. vinceliuice/WhiteSur-gtk-theme#493 (comment)

None. I don't have an alternate GTK theme installed. I am running Opensuse Tumbleweed with the following additional info:

Are you sure that the Breeze theme isn't applying to GTK4 apps? From what I see here it applies to GTK4 apps.

Thanks for your help. It is now working. I compiled ghostty using the following:
sudo zig build -p /usr -Doptimize=ReleaseFast -fsys=fontconfig
as you suggested.
