Easy Piecrust

Simply, satisfying, no-frills piecrust. Make a pie, or, empanadas, or samosas.

5 Servings


  • 2 C flour (white, 1/2 white 1/2 wheat, or glutten free)
  • 1 t salt
  • 2/3 C shortening
  • 5-7 T ice water, as needed

  • Have a cup of ice water and a spoon ready

Sift or mix the flour and salt in a mixing bowl. Dot the top of the flour with tablespoons of shortening. Cut the shortening into the flour with a patry cutter or by tossing and rubbing the flour and shortening together with your hands or fingers. Keep at it until the mixture resembles coarse meal and all visible lumps of shortening are gone. Lightly drizzle the water a tablespoon at a time, stirring with a wooden spoon or your fingers, until you can bring the dough together in a ball. Add a few extra drops if the dough is still crumbly. Shape the dough into a ball, the proceed with whatever recipe needs dough. Don' know what to make? Make a pie!

  • If it's a hot day, you may want to refridgerate the dought for 15 minutes before rolling and shaping it.
