Having a challenge getting my covers to do what I wanted to do I stumbled upon a question asking myself what the 'Open' and 'Closed' position of my covers actually should represent. I ended up in having a different definition as what I could achieve in Home Assistant so I started a Facebook poll in the Home Assistant group (click for the poll).
My question was to define the Open and Closed state of the two types of cover I have at my house; an awning and a shade:
The results show that (at the time of writing at least) the vast majority agrees with my thoughts that the definition differs per cover type. For an awning 'Open' means that it's fully extended, thus blocking the sun. For the shade 'Closed' means that it's fully extended/rolled out, thus blocking the sun. See voting results:
In Home Assistant, the sun-blocking state is always defined as 'Open'. The picture below shows my two covers in a sun-blocking state.
My point for this discussion is that the shade should show a colored icon in this state, thus the opposite coloring of the awning, while both are blocking the sun.
Fun fact: the mdi:roller-shade and mdi:roller-shade-closed icon prove my point 😄
