Assuming this should follow the same format as figures. The word table is not abbreviated in the caption of a table. This happens on a fresh compile of the template package (2023.03.13) using pdflatex.

I agree that it would be more consistent. If we were to fix this, we could do so by writing
\captionsetup[table]{name=Tab.}
in vgtc.cls right after
\RequirePackage{caption}
However, Table is not much longer than Tab. and I'd favor keeping it. Perhaps even move to using Table rather than Tab. in cross-references. What do you think @mattbrehmer ?
would prefer this to be left to the author's discretion, as long as they are internally consistent, with a default being of no abbreviation in cross-references or captions.
