Important realizations:
- Conversions between AES/EBU (XLR) and SPDIF (coax) are much simpler/cheaper
than conversions between other digital formats. This puts other options
(such as MADI, ADAT, Toslink, etc. at a clear disadvantage). Conclusion:
Find an audio interface with AES/EBU or SPDIF outputs.
- The longest speaker runs exceed may slightly 10m, which is the recommended
max length of SPDIF coax runs. AES/EBU XLR has a recommended max length of
100m, and therefore seems a safer choice.

Unresolved questions:
- Word clock? Guess will have to deal with that if sync-related problems arise.
