I appreciate that the equation to which corresponds a given reference (e.g. eqref:eq:15) is
displayed in a floating frame when the mouse hovers on the reference link.
However, only the raw latex environment is displayed, which is already very good.
To display equations directly in the org buffer I use math-preview
which overlays each math environment by an svg graphic
representing the equation just like you see it in a pdf.
I wonder if it would be possible that org-ref displays the overlay,
when it exists, of the equation to which points the reference link ?

I tried this a long time ago I think (eg showing images in tooltips or the minibuffer). It was either tricky, or depended on how emacs was built to work. I don't have time to work on it any time soon, but would consider a pull request.
