turns out we coundn't stream because blitting some PNGs around takes so long that pygame misses multiple stream service packets. this results in never having enough data to really get stream rendering going. many things have been hastily fucktored as we tested parts across the stack to track down this stupid, stupid issue. TODO: clean up everything.
