With the help of Francisco Mancardi I wrote a code that was merged into the TestLink repository trunk. Now you’re going to be able to upload attachments such as, for instance, test evidences to your TestLink :-). I hope you like it.
I decided to contribute with this code because I needed something similar for the TestLink Hudson plug-in. Hopefully the plug-in new version will be released before October.

Yesterday I released a new version of CCM Hudson Plugin. In this version, 1.0.1, there are two bugs fixed (7522 and 7531). For a more detailed background on these two issues check out Hudson JIRA.
And the latter BUG was a problem executing the command in a Windows 2003 environment. In the beginning I thought there would be something wrong in the BUG description. Bug after setting up a Virtual Machine with Windows 2003 I noticed that the command without double quotes didn’t work correctly in the Windows 2003. Although it worked in Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7.

When I started working in the TestLink java api with Daniel Padilla, he mentioned in some of his mails a tool called Jacobe. After I googled for this tool I found it in TIOBE’s website. Jacobe is a tool of TIOBE that beautifies your Java code, according to some rules that you can specify in one configuration file.
This is what Jacobe does, basically.
Jacobe itself is an executable but TIOBE provides an Ant task that lets you call Jacobe from an Ant build file. But wait a minute! What about Maven? Yeah, exactly. Jacobe lacked of Maven support. I talked to the guys from TIOBE and they kindly let me implement a Maven Plugin for Jacobe.

A month ago I started a project to help me in my new version of the TestLink Hudson plug-in. The plugin now relies heavily on Apache Maven for test execution. After reading a post on TestLink forum about an automation done using TAP, I googled to learn what that acronym stood for.
TAP is the abbreviation of Test Anything Protocol.It is a protocol to produce information about test execution and used mainly by the Perl community. For instance, you can test your system using PHPUnit, JUnit, Selenium or even a C class and produce what they call a TAP Stream. This stream’s content is like follows:

Some time ago I was asked by my boss to get all the images out of a Word document and save them in a separated directory. In this site the author gives you several different ways of extracting images from a Word document. However what I wanted was a quick and dirt way of having these images extracted without macros or having to open and save the document in HTML format.
So I wrote this quick and dirt word images extractor. It has two versions, one where you need to pass the .doc file as parameter and another one that gives you an input dialog box to point out where is the file. You can get the VBScripts from http://github.com/kinow/word-images-extractor.

Behind the scenes, this VBScript uses Word to save your .doc as .html and then copies the saved images into the same directory as your word file. So yes, you do have to have Word installed. If somebody gets interested in improving it, he/she could find a way of extracting multiple files at once. In this version some files are overridden. He/she could add to the beginning of the image name the word file name. Or it could be required to pass the output directory together with the input word file.
That’s it, I hope it might be helpful to somebody as it was - and still is - to me. :-)

On November 6th (next Saturday) Anderson Santos and I will present a Test Automation solution built on TestLink and Hudson at Encontro Ágil 2010. This meeting is for intended for the Agile community and will be hold at IME-USP (Instituto de Matemática e Estatística - Universidade de Sáo Paulo).
What is nice about this solution is that we aren’t trying to use TestLink as an Automation Tool. But yes, as a Test Management Tool (what TestLink is by nature). And the choice of the Test Execution Tool is up to you, as long as you generate TAP Stream (basically, files containing a log of tests executed). We only enable you to have these tests updated on your TestLink installation, this way you can plan a Test Cycle with both Manual and Automated Tests in one single tool.And lastly but not less important, this week Testing Experience Magazine accepted a proposal of article for the next issue on Open Source Tools about this solution. So we are working very hard to release TestLink Hudson Plug-in new version and spread this Test Automation Solution through the Testing/Quality community.

Since September I’ve been working on a project to integrate TestLink and Hudson. The project consists basically in a Hudson Plug-in that uses TestLink Java API to retrieve information of Automated Test Cases created in TestLink. I wrote an article in conjunction with Anderson dos Santos about this Plug-in. The article was published by Testing Experience in its December issue. The issue’s topic is Open Source Tools. You can download the whole magazine from Testing Experience website (I highly recommend downloading the magazine, there are some great articles there!).
Since we wrote the article we changed only the way we parsed the test reports. Instead of parsing only TAP report files, we decided implement TAP, JUnit and TestNG parsers. In the future we plan adding more parsers to others *nits and Selenium report files.
The plug-in is being used to automate acceptance tests in a CRM system that was developed by Sysmap Solutions. I will write about the automation process, experiences learned and mistakes to be avoided in future projects as soon as we finish writing the automated tests and setting up the Selenium Farm.
In the following days I’ll be writing more tutorials, guides and recording some video tutorials. In February of the next year this automation solution will be presented in the Belgium Testing Days event.
Today I talked to two QA Engineers about code coverage and we all agreed that code coverage helps, but is not enough. And by coincidence today I had to fix a bug in tap4j that reminded me the same thing. My cobertura (the coverage tool that I was using at moment) report said that my code was covered by my tests. However there was a bug in the covered code.
If you are curious about the code you can see this issue here. However if you really would like to know more about code coverage, I suggest you to read this fantastic article written by Brian Marick in 99 with the title “How to misuse code coverage”.

Strangely enough, today I decided start to write about TAP (Test Anything Protocol) and received a mail from a Linkedin Group with a white paper about data integration in information systems. Well, let me first explain what is TAP, or Test Anything Protocol. This protocol was created in the beginning of Perl to log test results and is still being used by Perl and other languages (PHPUnit can output TAP too, for instance).
Now, if you already know about TAP and YAML, or if you are like me and like trying things out before reading a long text, then go to the hands on part of this post.

Expected Exceptions
There is no special treatment for the Expected Exceptions in the tap4j Listeners. When a test passes, tap4j listeners logs only that the test succeeded. But when it fails and the Test Result contains a Throwable object, it is logged to the TAP Stream. I am still discussing it with Cesar whether it would be a good idea to parse the Throwable message body to retrieve the 'line', 'expected' and 'got' values for this error (these are entries in TAP Diagnostics - YAML).
Particularly, I would like to have this information in TestException. Maybe it could have a constructor public TestException(String message, Throwable t, String expected, String got, long lineNumber) and TestNG could fill this information for me :-). I know I'm being lazy, but I like the description of laziness in Larry Wall's WikiPedia entry. The following test is expecting an exception that is never thrown, thus it raises an exception.

Hi there, a new article about TestLink and Hudson (now Jenkins) was published, now in Automated Software Testing Magazine, issue March 2011. In this article you will find a short tutorial to set up a TestNG test and a simple Job to execute your automated tests.
Now we are writing a docbook document to explain with more details how the plug-in works and how you can play with it. We are also working in more samples, translation and video demos. Release 2.2 was planned for last Friday but I missed the date to add a new feature: TestLink platforms, this is the last known limitation in the plug-in.

This is my first article for a Brazilian magazine! :-D It was published in this month’s issue of MundoJ magazine (previously called MundoJava).
In this article Cesar Fernandes de Almeida, Anderson dos Santos and I discuss how to make your Java tests output TAP (Test Anything Protocol) Streams. This test protocol has been used by Perl developers since Perl’s first version (1983~) but hasn’t been used by many Java developers yet, unfortunately. We hope it incentives other Java developers to use TAP for their tests. There is an alternative to TAP too, SubUnit, which was pointed out for me by Robert Collins in the Jenkins dev-list few weeks ago. Now I am preparing a comparison between TAP and SubUnit as an analysis before developing a plug-in for Jenkins to show detailed test results (such as exception, images, raw test, error line, etc).
Throughout the article we explain how to use tap4j to generate TAP Streams with TestNG, however it is possible to use the same approach to generate TAP Streams with JUnit.
Now I will translate the article to send it to Patrick LeBoutillier, who contributed to this article answering patiently my questions by mail and writing metatap, a utility that lets you check if a TAP Stream is valid, according to the program parameters. This utility is being used in tap4j for integration tests between Perl and Java.
Unfortunately I’m not allowed to redistribute the article, not even an English version of it :-(

The first programming language that I had contact with was Perl. I was a 16 years old Slackware aficionado at that time, and was dying to have a web site with a guestbook . We did not have any cheap hosting services in Brazil that offered a PHP environment, but there were few companies that offered a free host with ads, and with Perl. I don’t remember which script I used, only that I found it in HotScripts.com and that it stored the guestbook entries in disk. Now, ten years after, here I am playing with Perl again! :-D

Being an old programming language does not mean that it cannot dispute with newer programming languages such as Ruby, Python, Scala or Go. Actually, it means that it is old, has a plethora of examples, good documentation and a vast and supportive community (a quick note here, Perl is the programming languages with more existing modules). Larry said during his talk that Perl won’t die, but evolve with time and have its place among other programming languages.
During my four years in Mackenzie University, the programming language that I used the most was C, and the script programming language was Shell. After the talks in the workshop, I realized that Perl has the best of both worlds, but its programs do the same thing with less lines of code in C and it has more modules and is more powerful then Shell.
I still think Perl is complicated, but depending on who wrote the code. :-) I found some nice code in CPAN to start playing with. Neat and easy to understand and modify/maintain.
I have a bunch of programs that I use to automate some tasks or simply customize my environment (turning a folder in a PHP project for Eclipse, for instance). As I use Windows and Ubuntu, I have C programs and Batch and Shell scripts that I use in both environments. I am slowly migrating my C and Batch and Shell scripts to Perl when applicable. This will save me time compiling my C code for each OS, and will replace some scripts that were getting too long and complicated.

Recently I left Sysmap Solutions, where I was a consultant, to have my labor card signed by Lojas Riachuelo, a famous Brazilian fashion retailer (like C&A, Zara, H&M and so on), part of Guararapes group.
So I am still getting used to the new routine, new systems and be a employee rather than a consultant.
There are also two talks to come, one in a few days at TDC (The Developers Conference) 2011 in Florianópolis, and another one in the beginning of September at JCertif in Congo/Brazzaville. While I already bought the tickets and booked the hotel rooms, I still have to finish some slides and practical examples for both events.
I already have two draft posts that I am still writing. One about continuous integration and parallelism/concurrency, and another one about spell check in DocBook projects, specially if you are using Maven.

Last weekend I attended TDC (The Developers Conference) 2011 in Florianópolis, in the south of Brazil. It was my first time in Florianópolis, but the weather was cloudy and cold, so I couldn’t check out one of the prettiest cities in Brazil :-( Bummer.
Putting the weather aside, TDC was great! Basically, there were many nice, easy-going people gathering together to talk about subjects like Java, SOA, Arduino, Testing, Agile and more. I had the chance to talk with skilled and experienced people, see different talks and catch up Guilherme Motta (@gfcmotta) from ThoughtWorks, who I have met in Porto Alegre in the beginning of this year. He gave an interesting talk about crowd testing using games as example, but varying with applications in different areas too.
Now I just finished uploading my (few) slides used during presentation to slideshare and scribd. The examples that I used during the presentation were MyBatis, Spring petclinic example (which runs only in tomcat 6.0.29, so they could do with integration tests in different servlet containers) and a lua project with Lua Test More and Jenkins tap-plugin. Below you will find a link to my presentation and some other useful stuff for Jenkins and testing. Specially the Selenium projects.
I also met Elias Nogueira (@eliasnogueira) and Cristiano Caetano (@c_caetano) there. I have been hearing about them since I started working with quality, last year. Elias was the coordinator of the Testing Track in the event. Thank you Elias, for all your support and patience mate!

Unfortunately I missed JCertif last weekend. My visa was in Brazzaville but I couldn't board in a flight from Johannesburg to Congo without it. Max Bonbhel kindly tried to fax me the visa, but the last flight to Congo closed and I had to come back to Brazil sooner. :-(

With a single format for your test results, you won't need to write many different parsers, one for each distinct format. Extensibility refers to the fact that using formats like xUnit (like JUnit) or TestNG XML you are limited to the XML schema.
Many projects are aiming automation in different levels. Executing automated tests can lead to situations where you need to have information like the database used, JDK version, screen shots taken during some tests, exception stack traces, etc. TAP and SubUnit provide manners to extend your test result and inform to a test consumer (the tool that reads your test output) about such information.

Yesterday I finally managed to build Jenkins using Eclipse and m2e plug-in. With Eclipse Indigo release came a new version of the Maven plug-in for Eclipse (former M2Eclipse), m2e. Since I started using Eclipse Indigo and this new plug-in I hadn't been able to build Jenkins in Eclipse anymore.
I've been having a terrible fever and thought that it would be a good thing to stop playing Minecraft for a while and find a way to build Jenkins in Eclipse + m2e :-).
1. Maven Plug-ins execution in project life cycle
The first thing I've noticed were the messages regarding the execution of some Maven plug-ins in the project life cycle. m2e delegates the execution of Maven plug-ins to an external executor. As not all Maven plug-ins have an existing executor for m2e you will receive a message similar to "Plugin execution not covered by lifecycle configuration: ...".
The solution for this issue was adding a rule for each plug-in execution. This rule must contain a version or version range and declare whether this plug-in execution must be executed or ignored by m2e. You have two ways of adding these rules. You could a) Google for an example, b) replace group, artifact name and version. Or you could a) open pom.xml and select the tab "pom.xml" (this will open the XML source of your pom.xml) b) go to the line marked with an error in Eclipse, leave your mouse pointer over it and select the option "Permanently mark goal...", choose the parent pom.xml (jenkins/pom.xml) and save all documents.

Practical test doubles: adding stubs to TestLink Java API
"Test Double is a generic term for any case where you replace a production object for testing purposes" [1]. There are different types of Test Doubles: Dummy, Fake, Stubs, Spies and Mocks. In this post we will see a practical example of adding stubs to TestLink Java API.
Stubs are objects that return canned answers to calls during tests [1]. This is useful specially when you have a system that communicates with different resources such as databases, web services, XML-RPC services and so on.
TestLink Java API is a small Java project created to act as an interface between TestLink XML-RPC API and a client program written in Java.
Starting on the wrong foot
You know when sometimes you start a project just to suppress certain necessity and then write down a long TODO list? Well, sooner or later you will have to start working on those items. When I wrote the first version of the API I was writing Jenkins TestLink Plug-in, and had a priority project that depended on both tools to be deployed to a customer's site. Due to the deadlines and priorities, the tests in TestLink Java API were made to run directly against a test instance of TestLink.
After that the code was open sourced and, as was expected, bugs, features and enhancements started to be requested by users. You can imagine many drawbacks in this approach, such as newcomers to the project would need to install a test instance of TestLink with equal set up parameters, and to not mention how hard it would be to have Continuous Integration in a service provider like CloudBees, where I wouldn't have TestLink installed.
On the right foot now...
So the main issue regarding the project build was the direct access to the TestLink XML-RPC API. A neat solution for it was to use Stubs during tests. The idea was to create a stubs capable of, given a call to TestLink XML-RPC, it would then answer with a canned XML.
I thought I would have to dig into Jetty, Winstone or some small web server by myself and include it to the project, but fortunately somebody else [2] has passed by it and blogged about his experience with some sample code.
The approach used in TestLink Java API was quite similar to the one described in [2]. I used WireShark to save the XML returned by TestLink XML-RPC API and when I create an instance of the web server, it knows which XML it must return to the caller object. Below you can see BaseTest, a class used as base for new tests.
Now anybody can simply execute mvn clean test to build the project. It won't connect to any instance of TestLink, and all the tests will be executed in less then one minute. When there is a new release of TestLink, I will need to update my XML files generated with Wireshark (I will automate it with Python or Perl) and then test and work on the differences.
This approach can be used to test web services, XML-RPC servers and any similar environment. Hope it helps somebody else too. Cheers! :D

Tis’ the end of 2011! Yay! Throughout this year I’ve heard people repeatedly saying that I had too much on my plate, and that I should quit some projects, stop giving talks, start surfing again amongst other things. Now, looking back, although I’m quite happy with my achievements in 2011, I can see their point.
In 2010 I started working as Software Quality Engineer with Anderson Santos. He was the greatest supporter of many of my ideas, so although we stopped working together in 2011, I’m still grateful to him for all he taught, for his advices and for spending some time guiding me.
He motivated me to start giving talks, going to more conferences and contributing more actively to Open Source projects. Since then, I’ve given almost 10 talks, including one in Belgium Testing Days, another one in Oracle JavaOne and in March next year I will be in America for a talk in STPCON. I also missed JCertif conference in Congo due to visa problems and learned some lessons from it (so sorry Max :)
I’ve also joined few Open Source projects, including TestLink, Jenkins, created tap4j, testlink-java-api, Jenkins CCM, TestLink and TAP plug-ins. Was included as contributor to Apache Functor project due to some minor contributions. And what is the most important thing: I had a lot of fun doing all of this! And learned so much!
There are also the articles! About ten papers, for German, American and Brazilian computer magazines. Most of them written in English (I still have a lot to learn, I know). This helped me to achieve IELTS 7 band score few days ago!
I’ve also completed three years since I met Cibele, and probably will be a proud husband in 2012 :-) Couldn’t have done none of these items mentioned here without her by my side. As well as friends like Cesar Fernandes and Brian P. Bourke. Thanks mates!
In 2011 I jumped parachutes for the very first time, started practicing slack line, surfing, climbing, went to Europe and Africa for the first time. And I started drawing again! Even illustrated two of my articles.
Finally, I’m founding TupiLabs with Cesar Fernandes. It’ll be a company to work and create solutions using other Open Source tools (Hadoop, Biojava, TestLink, Jenkins, Chef, Apache, etc). Although there are plenty companies like that in US and Europe, there ain’t many here in Brazil and South American in general; yet! We are still finishing some projects to release in January 2012 together with a new TupiLabs website.

Definitely reading Hacker News before going to bed is a bad idea :-) Same goes for Reddit. So, I found a link about Bats, a tool to execute tests in Shell and output TAP - Test Anything Protocol. Then I thought; why not ask the author to include Bats under the list of Producers in testanything.org?
But you know what? Why not execute execute locally first to check if that’s working… moreover, why not use Jenkins TAP Plug-in and see what happens?
Install Jenkins, tap plug-in and git plug-in. Create a new free style build. Add Bats git repository url under SCM. This way Jenkins will retrieve Bats code from Github (you don't need to install it if you don't want to). Add a build step which executes the following shell code: ./bin/bats test/bats.bats > test.t
Before executing the build, you have to check the option to publish TAP results in the end of the configuration screen. That’s it. Execute your job, chug the remaining of your beer and now you can go to bed… or just refresh Hacker News and Reddit once more…
Bats is a very nice TAP producer for Shell. Haven’t had time to play with the other producers for Shell, or explore Bats thoroughly, but it looks very promising. Hope to see more people writing tests for shell code.

This is a long post. So here is a TL;DR:
Apache Commons Functor has no Double or Float Range (yet)
Apache Commons Functor IntegerRange and LongRange treat the low value as inclusive, and the high value as exclusive. How does that compare to other languages/APIs? (you will have to read to see some comparison)
Perl has support for characters ranges, perhaps we could implement it in Functor too?
In case we implemented a CharacterRange, it would have to be inclusive for both low and high limits. With 'z' being the last character, there wouldn't have a way to include Z with the current approach. Or we would have to make the CharacterRange a special one. What would go against Liskov Substitution Principle.

It would be nice to have a clear distinction in Functor documentation among a Sequence, a Generator and a Range. While I was gathering material for this post, I found places using range, others using sequence, and in Apache Commons Functor, an IntegerRange is a Generator.

This post is about ranges in Apache Commons Functor but first let me explain the context. I am working on nebular, an open source fuzzy logic API. This API is written in pure Java, and has Matlab Fuzzy Toolbox as reference for the initial release. Nebular will use functional programming to let the user to model his/her membership functions. The API chosen for functional programming is Apache Commons Functor.
Yesterday I finished to port sigmf function to nebular, including some tests that compare nebular’s output to Matlab sigmf function. However, here comes the issue with ranges, sequences and generators. The idea is to plot a graph similar to the one below.
The x axis contains values from 0 to 10, increasing by 0.1. In Matlab, I would execute the following command to produce the x vector.
x=0:0.1:10;
The : is the range operator in Matlab. It would create a vector with 101 elements. Yup, 101. That’s because in Matlab the low and high value used creating the range are inclusive. Now let’s look at how I create similar vector in Apache Commons Functor.
So now one can realize two things: there is no Double or Float Range, and the high value in the range is exclusive. It means that in order to create an array (I will use vector and array interchangeably here for simplicity) with Functor from 0 to 10, including both values, you have to create a range using 0 and 11.
Comparing with other Java functional programming API's
There are other API's to include functional programming features to Java code. In this comparison I will include Google Guava, fun4j, functionaljava, lambdaj and op4j (got the list from the fun4f project page).

Google Guava provides the Range and Ranges classes. The Ranges contains several static methods for creating Range's, that can be used as collections. The Ranges class contains methods for creating Range's with open, closed, openClosed and closedOpen intervals.

I have been using Maven sites for a while, and am very happy with it. I didn't like to have to update my projects after Maven 3, but that was all right, Maven 3 brought many new cool things. However, there were two things that annoyed me: lack of a nice and modern skin, and browsing Javadoc of complex code. The thought of creating a custom Maven skin even crossed my mind, but I never had time to read about it.
But the world is full of good and talented people! Like the guys from 99soft. They created Maven Fluido Skin, and donated it to Apache Software Foundation. It's built on top of Twitter's Bootstrap and available from Maven central repository. In order to use it in your Maven project, all that you have to do is add the following settings into your src/site/site.xml:

Peter Florijn and I are writing a Jenkins plug-in to integrate several test tools into Jenkins, something similar to what is done in TestLink plug-in. It’s still an idea being explored, and the whole project is subjected to changes without warning. The code is at https://github.com/kinow/testthemall.
The first tool that we are integrating is not TestLink, but Mozilla Testopia. As part of the process to integrate these tools, many Java API’s to interface the existing external APIs will be created, like it was done in TestLink with TestLink Java API.
Installing Testopia is very easy and straightforward. This was the best guide that I could find, and worked without errors at my Debian Squeeze. I only had to move the directories from /var/www to my home directory (I use my PHP Eclipse workspace as Apache home).
Testopia has a XML-RPC APi, just like TestLink, however it lacks an user friendly documentation and examples. I migrated the Java driver from Ant to Maven, for the sake of commodity. But the XML-RPC server is complaining that I have to log-in before listing the test cases of a test plan.
If you are interested in using Java and Testopia, here’s the link for the java project with Maven support: https://github.com/kinow/testopia-java-driver. I will update the project with examples, more tests and will try to clean up the code. Probably I will use either GitHub pages or a Wiki somewhere to document how to use Testopia and Java.

How I started in Open Source
I was studying at Mackenzie Presbyterian University when I met Professor Rogerio Brito. Most of my friends were terrified of him. Maybe because of the class name “Structured Programming I”. Or maybe because of what Brito taught us at class.
My degree was in computing, Bachelor in System Information. Although it is related to Computer Science, we don’t have the same classes. In Computer Science you have more math, statistics and even physics, while in System Information you have administration, strategic planning, law and others related to business.
Although Structured Programming had a list of topics, Brito didn’t limit himself to those. Eventually he would try to teach us about algorithms, software complexity, the importance of writing academic papers and explain about Open Source software.
I remember one day we were dismissed before 10PM. I used to run for the bus stop for not being too late at home and cause it could be dangerous lingering on the streets of Consolacao neighborhood by myself, waiting for the bus. But that day I stumbled with Brito near the Professor’s Room.
He invited me in. It was my first time in there. There were books and papers lying on the main table and in another part of the room there was a desktop computer. We started talking about programming and I can’t recall how but we ended up talking about Open Source. He showed me some websites and explained about a lot of nerd stuff.
I left the room after 11PM. Late for my bus and with a paper sheet. A very important paper sheet. It had a list of items to study, software to learn about and names that I had never heard before. One of the items of that list that I can still remember was “Reading about Open JDK” (now being adopted over Oracle/Sun JDK). There was “Create a program for finding software bugs” too (like the famous FindBugs).
He taught me about the basics of Open Source, gave me a list of interesting projects, explained how to join the project, where to look for information and how to assess the maturity and quality of a project. And also taught me more about USP - University of Sao Paulo - and how to submit academic papers and what was a call for paper (when he said that word I translated it to Portuguese, you can imagine the confusion in my head) :-)
He made me curious.
This weekend I sent him an e-mail about analyzing the parallel execution of a software, using Debian. He sent me a reply with some interesting links and a brief introduction about the topic. It’s starred at my inbox, while I look for some spare time to read his links and, certainly, learn something useful and interesting for any nerd.
Since that class, back in 2005, 2006, I’ve been involved in several Open Source projects, became an Apache Committer few days ago (I will write about this later) and I have created a company (TupiLabs) specialized in Open Source.
Thank you for lecturing me Brito, and thank you for not limiting your classes to the class planning. I believe that’s the best quality of a professor.

Most TestLink [1] users are aware that there is an external API, maybe for the external API token being displayed in the user profile section. Today after a meeting with Peter Florijn [2], I realized that the same may not be true for Testopia [3] users.
I am quite new to Testopia, and there are many features that I haven’t used yet. But if I understand it correctly, the database is interfaced by several Perl scripts that are, by its turns, exposed as Web Service (most of them). The web services are available via a JSON and a XML-RPC API (what is very useful, TestLink supports supports only XML-RPC).
The communication between different programming languages and the external API’s is accomplished by a client API. In TestLink you have testlink-java-api [4] and testlink-api-java-client [5].
Testopia has a Java client too, available in Testopia source repository [6] and can be used to integrate your existing Java code with Testopia.
Peter and I have been working on Jenkins Testopia Plug-in [7], released few weeks ago and with its new version being released at this very moment. It’s been fun to write this new plug-in, and we are using a type of Scrum to manage the project, what makes it even more interesting.
During the project feature definition and initial structure, we created a new implementation, motivated by the following reasons (in no special order):
Provide an API for Maven developers
Publish this new API to Maven central repository (so Gradle, Ivy and Maven users could use it too)
Use a non DDD (Domain Driven Design) approach, as it helps debugging serialization issues in Jenkins (only one element talks to Testopia. So we put this element in Jenkins master, and don't have to worry about calls to objects methods serialized to slaves)
Test doubles, so we could increase test coverage without the need of a Testopia instance running
We haven’t released this API to Maven central yet, as we still have to polish the code, add tests and more methods. But you can already start playing with this API, the code is at GitHub, http://www.github.com/kinow/testopia-java-driver [8], and here’s a Snippet of code to get you started with the API.

Right now we are working on a new project using Apache Nutch 2.x, Apache Hadoop, Apache Solr 4 and a lot of other cool tools/modules/API’s/etc. After following the instructions found on http://nlp.solutions.asia/?p=180, I’ve successfully connected Apache Nutch, MySQL and Apache Solr.
In summary:
Create a database to hold your data
Use SQLDataStore and add configuration for your MySQL server
Update Apache Nutch configuration
Update Solr schema
Now our Apache Nutch uses MySQL as data store (the place where it keeps the result of the crawling process, such as URL, text content, metadata, and so on). That’s grand, but there is one part missing in the Solr Schema provided in the blog post.
Due to SOLR-3432, after following the tutorial and replacing the schema, we couldn’t delete the whole index anymore. After following the instructions in the bug comments, and adding the following entry in schema.xml it worked again.
Hope it helps if you are creating a similar set up. In the next posts we will explain how to set up Apache Nutch 2.x branch in Eclipse. It is very helpful for writing and debugging plug-ins.

Last weekend I spent some hours assembling old computer parts to create my commodity hardware cluster for running Hadoop. I already had a local installation in my notebook, so I thought it would be cool to run the word-count example in both scenarios to see what would be the results.

Notice that there is one NameNode (exclusive) and one JobTracker (exclusive too). I'm following the default for a cluster installation, but will try switching a DataNode/TaskTracker with less computing power for the NameNode or the JobTracker (they were randomly selected), and using both servers as DataNode/TaskTracker too.
First I used the default data from this tutorial, that includes only three books. Then I increased to 8 books. Not happy with the result I tried 30, and finally 66 books. You can get the data from the same GitHub repository mentioned above.
Using the web interface I retrieved the total time to execute each job, and using the following R script, plotted the graph below (for more on plotting R graphs, check this link).
