Not working out of the box with turbolinks

I'm using the following:

rails (5.0.2)
turbolinks (5.0.1)
unobtrusive_flash (3.2.0)

I'm using <div class="unobtrusive-flash-container"></div> in my application layout

flashes are not displaying on turbolink loads.

if I add to application.js

$(document).on('turbolinks:load', UnobtrusiveFlash.showFlashFromCookies);

then they do show.
