Garbage output

I've had several models now that just output garbage and I'm wondering is this an issue with the model, hardware or lmstudio?

I've tried deleting and redownloading the models, ejecting and reloading, deleting and starting a new conversation and fiddling with the settings (which don't always seem to apply). The result is questions are answered with random characters and jibberish.
